Las Negras to Cala de San Pedro Walk
Coastal path in Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park from Las Negras to the cove of Cala de San Pedro: 4 km each way, 250 m of climbing, no shade, on the official San Pedro–Agua Amarga trail.
About Las Negras to Cala de San Pedro Walk
Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park protects the most intact volcanic coast in southern Europe, and this walk follows its wildest stretch. It is the first third of the official Sendero San Pedro–El Plomo–Agua Amarga, an 11.1 km linear trail graded medium to high by the Junta de Andalucía. Lava headlands, esparto grass and dwarf fan palms frame a cove with a sandy beach, a ruined coastal fort and a spring.
The trail starts 500 m north of Las Negras beside Cortijo El Estanquillo, with space for about 20 cars. A stony track climbs to the route's high point at 249 m, passes a viewpoint back to Cerro Negro and the San Ramón castle, then forks: the right branch drops steeply on loose ground to the beach, about 4 km and 1 hour 15 minutes from the start. Return the same way, or continue over the Punta Javana plateau to Cala del Plomo and Agua Amarga.
The route is free and needs no permit. There is no shade, so avoid the middle of the day from June to September and carry 2 litres of water each; the Junta advises checking that fountain water is drinkable. Wild camping and fires are not allowed in the park. Wear proper walking shoes for the loose descent. It suits fit families with older children.
The best months are October to May, when the path is cool by mid-morning. Bring a hat, sun cream and swimming things. In summer start early: the cove fills by noon and the walk back is the hottest part of the day.
