Despeñaperros and Los Órganos
Despeñaperros is the Sierra Morena gorge where the A-4 enters Andalucía near Santa Elena, with relief of more than 500 m and the upright quartzite pillars of Los Órganos.
About Despeñaperros and Los Órganos
Despeñaperros is a deep defile at the eastern end of Sierra Morena, cut by the Río Despeñaperros through Armorican quartzite formed in a shallow sea about 500 million years ago. Folded upright in the Variscan mountain building, the hardest beds stand out as walls and spires; the best known, Los Órganos, are vertical ribs resembling organ pipes.
The best way in is the Barranco de Valdeazores trail, 6.4 km and about 3 hours, through Mediterranean woodland and a chestnut grove, then along a pine ridge to the Collado de la Aviación, a Civil War air-watch post on Los Órganos. It ends at a rocky viewpoint over the defile. Golden and Bonelli's eagles and peregrines nest on the crags.
The trailhead is the Valdeazores forestry house, on a track off the A-4 at km 245.3, southbound only, 200 m after the sign marking the entry into Andalucía; park by the house. The rocky path climbs about 300 m, so it suits fit walkers and older children in boots, not wheelchairs. No permit is needed; check springs before drinking.
Spring and autumn are best; the ridge is hot and exposed on summer afternoons. Low morning or evening sun brings out the texture of the quartzite, and the Cimbarra waterfall makes an easy second stop the same day.

The gorge lies within the municipality of Santa Elena, whose Museum of the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa (8 km) explains the 1212 battle that opened Andalucía to the Christian kingdoms. East across the hills, the Cascada de la Cimbarra (12 km) is a waterfall on the Río Guarrizas, which the Río Despeñaperros joins further south; it is cut through the same quartzite. Rock-art enthusiasts can look for the Cueva de los Muñecos within the park. La Carolina, an 18th-century planned town, is about 20 km south on the A-4, and in Linares the Andrés Segovia Museum (36 km) and Raphael Museum of Linares (36 km) make a cultural stop.
