Unicaja Joaquín Peinado Museum
The Museo Unicaja Joaquín Peinado, in the 18th-century palace of the Marqueses de Moctezuma in Ronda's La Ciudad, shows nearly 200 works by the Ronda-born avant-garde painter.
About Unicaja Joaquín Peinado Museum
The Museo Unicaja Joaquín Peinado is an art museum on the Plaza del Gigante in La Ciudad, the oldest part of Ronda, in Málaga province. Run by the Fundación Unicaja, it occupies the restored palace of the Marqueses de Moctezuma, an 18th-century mansion with a traditional Andalusian layout and a pared-back modern interior. It was once home to the last descendants of Moctezuma.
Joaquín Peinado was born in Ronda in 1898 and died in Paris in 1975. A contemporary and friend of Picasso, he is counted among the leading painters of the Spanish avant-garde. His work moved from Novecentismo to Cubism after he discovered Cézanne and Picasso, and later explored new realism, ideas close to Surrealism, abstraction and lyrical figuration. Nearly 200 of his works are on show, with landscapes, still lifes and portraits, a recurring interest in the female nude, and the bright colour and large geometric planes of his post-war canvases.
Photography is not allowed inside, and bags must be left behind. Hours differ between winter and summer, so check the Unicaja museums website before going.
Spring and autumn are the best seasons in Ronda. Come at opening time, before the day-trip crowds from the coast reach La Ciudad around midday.

Nearby places to visit
From Ronda, the nearby places to visit lie out of town. South over the Serranía, the A-397 winds down towards the Costa del Sol and Benahavís. Club de Golf La Zagaleta (26 km) is a gated country club estate above San Pedro de Alcántara, set in roughly 1,000 hectares of protected hill country. Lower down the same road, Los Arqueros Golf & Country Club (28 km), designed by Seve Ballesteros and opened in 1991, threads through two valleys, and La Quinta Golf & Country Club (29 km), above Nueva Andalucía, has 27 holes by Manuel Piñero, who also runs his academy there.
