Colegiata de Osuna

The Colegiata de Osuna is a Renaissance collegiate church founded in 1535 on the hill above Osuna, with a Plateresque ducal pantheon of 1544–1555 and paintings by José de Ribera.

About Colegiata de Osuna

The Colegiata crowns the hill above Osuna, 90 km east of Seville, beside the old university. Juan Téllez Girón, 4th Count of Ureña, obtained a papal bull in 1535 to found it on the site of the castle church, which had burnt down. Its austere stone exterior, attributed to Diego de Riaño and Martín de Gaínza, resembles a fortress, while the hall-church interior is wide and bright. It became a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1931.

Guided visits start in the Patio del Santo Sepulcro of 1544–1555, a fine example of Plateresque work, then pass the sacristy, with its green and gold coffered ceiling, and descend to the pantheon chapels of the Counts of Ureña and Dukes of Osuna. The church holds a Christ by Juan de Mesa of 1623, and the sacristy museum shows five paintings by José de Ribera.

Entry is €6, or €9 with the Monasterio de la Encarnación and the Archaeological Museum; groups book on 954 81 04 44. Visits are guided only, at set times: in winter Tuesday to Saturday at 10:15, 11:15, 12:15, 13:15, 16:00 and 17:00, Sundays mornings only. Allow an hour. The crypt is down stairs and the approach is steep, so access with reduced mobility is limited.

Mornings are best, as inland Osuna is very hot in summer, when tours run only from 09:15 to 13:15. Spring suits a walk past the town's Baroque mansions. It is closed on Mondays.
