Campo de Gibraltar
Campo de Gibraltar is a key crossroads of culture and nature where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic.
Why visit Campo de Gibraltar
Campo de Gibraltar is the southern tip of Cádiz province, gathered around the Bay of Algeciras and looking across to the Rock of Gibraltar and the mountains of North Africa. It brings together very different faces: busy towns such as La Línea de la Concepción, San Roque and Los Barrios, the upmarket marina and golf courses of Sotogrande, and quiet hill villages such as Castellar and Jimena de la Frontera. Inland, the cork-oak forests of Los Alcornocales Natural Park stretch for miles, while the Guadiaro and Hozgarganta rivers wind through orchards around San Martín del Tesorillo. It suits travellers who like contrasts, from golf and sailing to wild walking and frontier history.
Main attractions in Campo de Gibraltar
Castellar Viejo is a village built entirely within the walls of a medieval castle, and Jimena de la Frontera’s hilltop castle looks out over the cork forests, with the Laja Alta rock paintings nearby. San Roque was founded by the Spanish residents who left Gibraltar after 1704, and its old quarter keeps that history alive. Los Alcornocales Natural Park offers some of the finest walking in the province, through cork oaks, gall-oak woods and streams, and the Strait is one of Europe’s key routes for migrating raptors and storks in spring and autumn. Sotogrande is known for polo, sailing and golf, and La Línea is the crossing point for visitors walking into Gibraltar. Food mixes the sea and the mountains, with fresh fish and seafood on the coast, and game, mushrooms and cork-country stews in the hill villages.
