Algámitas

A small white village in the Sierra Sur of Seville province, set below the limestone Peñón and the province's highest summits.

Why visit Algámitas

Algámitas is a quiet farming village in the far south-east of Seville province, where the rolling olive country of the campiña gives way to the limestone ridges of the Sierra Sur. With around a thousand inhabitants, whitewashed streets and a slow daily rhythm, it is about as far from the tour-bus trail as Andalucía gets. What draws visitors is the landscape: the rocky outcrop of the Peñón de Algámitas rises right beside the village, and the Sierra del Tablón behind it holds El Terril, the highest point in the province. It suits walkers, birdwatchers and travellers looking for a rural base with wide views and very few crowds.

What to see and do in Algámitas

The village itself is a short stroll: a central square, the parish church and lanes of low white houses climbing towards the hills. The main reason to stay longer is outdoors. Marked paths lead up the Peñón de Algámitas for views across the campiña towards Osuna and Estepa, and longer routes climb into the Sierra del Tablón towards El Terril, where griffon vultures and other raptors ride the thermals. The surrounding country is a patchwork of olive groves, cereal fields and holm oak, at its greenest in spring. Algámitas is also the base for guided walking holidays in the area, which combine local trails with days out to the Sierra de Grazalema, the white villages and Seville. Nearby Osuna, with its collegiate church and Baroque palaces, and Estepa, home of the Christmas polvorón, make easy half-day trips by car.

A day in Algámitas

Start with a morning climb of the Peñón de Algámitas while the air is cool, taking binoculars for the vultures. Return to the village for a late lunch of local stew in a bar on the square. In the afternoon, drive 25 minutes to Osuna to see the collegiate church and its Baroque palaces, and finish with almond sweets in Estepa on the way back.

Food and local life

Food here follows the farming year: hearty stews, migas, local olive oil, game and cured meats, with simple bars serving tapas to a mostly local crowd. Village fiestas in summer, and the pilgrimages and processions of spring, are the best times to see traditional life. Estepa's almond sweets and Osuna's restaurants are within easy reach for a wider choice.

Around Algámitas

Algámitas is one of nineteen towns in the Sierra Sur comarca, a rural corner of Seville province known for olive oil, Christmas sweets and saline lagoons. The lagoons of La Lantejuela and Martín de la Jara attract flamingos after wet winters, and the Vía Verde de la Sierra, an old railway turned cycle path, starts across the border in Olvera. Seville is about 90 minutes away.

Getting there and around

Algámitas is in the Sierra Sur comarca, around 110 km south-east of Seville and roughly an hour and a half's drive from the city or from Málaga airport. A car is the practical way to arrive and explore; public transport is limited to occasional buses towards Osuna. Accommodation is mainly rural houses and small guesthouses. Walking is best from October to May; summer days are hot, so start early.
