Villanueva de San Juan

A quiet hill village in Seville's Sierra Sur, surrounded by olive groves and limestone ridges, and a peaceful base for walking.

Why visit Villanueva de San Juan

Villanueva de San Juan sits in the hilly south of Seville province, close to where the provinces of Seville, Cádiz and Málaga meet. It is a small agricultural village of white houses and steep lanes, framed by olive groves and the ridges of the Sierra Sur, and it sees few visitors beyond walkers and people with family ties to the area. That is its appeal: unhurried mornings, open countryside and big skies. It suits slow travellers and walkers who want to combine rural trails with day trips to the white villages and to historic towns such as Osuna.

What to see and do in Villanueva de San Juan

The village centres on its square and parish church, with lanes that climb towards viewpoints over the surrounding farmland. Walking routes head into the hills shared with neighbouring Algámitas and Pruna, through olive groves, holm oak and limestone outcrops, where raptors are a common sight. Guided walking holidays in the Sierra Sur use the village as a stop, pairing local routes with excursions to the Sierra de Grazalema and to Seville. By car, Osuna's collegiate church, old university and palaces are a short drive away, and Olvera's castle, the start of the Vía Verde de la Sierra cycling and walking route, lies just over the border in Cádiz province.

A day in Villanueva de San Juan

Take a morning walk into the hills around the village, through olive groves and holm oaks, and stop at a viewpoint over the farmland. After lunch in the village, drive to Osuna to visit its collegiate church, the ducal pantheon and the Baroque palaces of Calle San Pedro. In the evening, return for a quiet drink in the square.

Food and local life

Expect home cooking rather than restaurants with menus in several languages: stews, migas in winter, salads dressed with local olive oil, cured pork and seasonal game. Bars in the centre serve tapas to locals, and summer fiestas bring music and processions to the streets. Estepa, known for its polvorones and mantecados, is close enough for a sweet detour.

Around Villanueva de San Juan

Villanueva de San Juan belongs to the Sierra Sur comarca, a landscape of olive country, limestone ridges and small towns. Nearby Algámitas has the area's best mountain walks, Osuna and Estepa hold its grandest monuments, and the white villages of the Sierra de Cádiz, including Olvera and Setenil, are under an hour away. The rural roads are quiet and popular with cyclists.

Getting there and around

Villanueva de San Juan is in the Sierra Sur comarca, about 100 km south-east of Seville and roughly 1 hour 30 minutes by car from the city. A car is essential for exploring; bus links are sparse. Stay in rural houses in the village or in nearby Osuna, which has more choice. The best walking months are autumn and spring.
