Nerja
A seaside town on cliffs above the Mediterranean, famous for the Balcón de Europa, its caves and the coves of Maro.
Why visit Nerja
Nerja sits on low cliffs at the eastern end of the Málaga coast, where the mountains of the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama come down to the sea. It has grown from a fishing village into a resort without losing its small-town feel, with whitewashed streets, a palm-lined promenade and a string of beaches and coves. The coast east of town is protected as the Maro-Cerro Gordo cliffs natural area. Nerja suits families, couples and walkers, and makes a good base for exploring the villages of the Axarquía.
What to see and do in Nerja
The Balcón de Europa, a promenade on a headland, gives sweeping views along the coast and is the centre of town life. The Nerja Caves, discovered in 1959, are a vast series of chambers with huge formations and prehistoric paintings, and host a summer music festival. The Nerja Museum explains the town's history and the caves. Burriana is the liveliest beach, while Calahonda and Carabeillo are small coves beneath the cliffs, and Maro beach is a sheltered cove further east. Kayaking and snorkelling trips explore the Maro-Cerro Gordo cliffs and waterfalls, and the Río Chíllar walk follows a river upstream through narrow gorges, wading as you go. Frigiliana is 6 km inland.
A day in Nerja
Visit the Nerja Caves in the morning, then walk to the Balcón de Europa and the old town. After a paella lunch on Burriana beach, kayak along the Maro-Cerro Gordo cliffs. In the evening, drive up to Frigiliana for dinner in the village.
Food and local life
Paella cooked over wood fires on Burriana beach is a Nerja tradition, especially at Chiringuito Ayo. Try fried fish, espetos and local sweet wine, and in autumn look for tropical fruit from the Axarquía.
Around Nerja
Nerja is in the Axarquía comarca. Frigiliana, Cómpeta and the Mudéjar villages are short drives inland, Torrox and Torre del Mar lie to the west, and Almuñécar is across the provincial border to the east. Day trips from Málaga combine Nerja and Frigiliana in a single outing. The Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park has longer walks, including the climb to El Cielo, a peak above the town.
See every town and village on the Axarquía page.
Getting there and around
Nerja is in the Axarquía comarca, about 50 minutes from Málaga airport by car. Buses run to Málaga, Frigiliana and Almuñécar. The town is walkable, with steps down to the beaches. Book the caves in advance in summer. Spring and autumn are ideal; summer is busy.
