Grazalema
Grazalema is a whitewashed mountain village about 820 metres up below the Peñón Grande in the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park, and one of the rainiest places in Spain.
About Grazalema
Grazalema sits at about 820 metres on the Sierra del Endrinal, below the limestone Peñón Grande, looking down the Guadalete valley. Moorish Ben-Zulema was taken by Castile in 1485, and wool cloth and blankets later made it a busy textile town. It is a Conjunto Histórico, one of Los Pueblos más Bonitos de España since 2017, with about 2,000 inhabitants.
Plaza de España, with the town hall and a stone fountain, is the centre. At its east end stands the 17th-century Iglesia de la Aurora, with an elliptical nave; San Juan's slender tower and San José's three-arched belfry rise nearby. The Los Peñascos and Los Asomaderos viewpoints overlook the roofs, and the blanket factory has a free textile museum.
Ronda is 32 km (35 minutes) away, Seville about 118 km (2 hours) and Málaga 133 km, the last stretch on mountain roads; buses are few. Park at the entrance and walk: the lanes are steep and cobbled, so wheelchair users will manage only the square. Allow half a day, a full day with a walk. It suits hikers, photographers and food lovers.
Spring and autumn are best; from October to April bring a waterproof, as this is one of Spain's rainiest places, and record rain forced an 11-day evacuation in February 2026. On the Lunes del Toro de Cuerda, the Monday after 16 July, a roped bull runs the streets. Try payoyo cheese, lamb caldereta and cubilete pastries. Tip: the textile museum closes at weekends.
