Municipal Historical Museum of Écija

Écija's Museo Histórico Municipal fills the Baroque Palacio de Benamejí and shows Roman Astigi, led by the Wounded Amazon, a painted marble statue found in 2002.

About Municipal Historical Museum of Écija

The Museo Histórico Municipal de Écija occupies the Palacio de Benamejí on Calle Cánovas del Castillo, one of the Baroque mansions of this Seville country town. Building began in the early 18th century, and the palace ranks with the nearby Palacio de Peñaflor among Écija's finest examples of Baroque civil architecture.

The nine archaeology rooms trace the area from prehistory to the Middle Ages, but Roman Astigi is the reason to come. The star is the Wounded Amazon, a marble statue about two metres tall with traces of its original paint, found in February 2002 in the Plaza de España, part of the Roman forum. The 200-square-metre mosaic room holds six large pavements from urban excavations, including the Triumph of Bacchus, the Gift of Wine and the Seasons of the Year. Look also for the Placa de Écija, a piece of 7th-century BC Tartessian goldwork, and the warrior stelae.

Entry is free and the museum is closed on Mondays. Hours change between winter and summer, so check before you go.

Écija is known as the frying pan of Andalucía, so come between October and May and visit in the morning, while the streets are still cool enough to walk on to the town's churches.
