Zahara de la Sierra
A white village crowned by a Moorish castle tower, rising above the turquoise waters of the Zahara-El Gastor reservoir.
Why visit Zahara de la Sierra
Zahara de la Sierra climbs a steep hill at the northern edge of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park, with a Moorish castle tower on the summit and a turquoise reservoir spread out below. It is one of the most photographed of the white villages, and the views from the top are among the best in the Sierra de Cádiz. Zahara changed hands several times in the wars between Christian and Moorish kingdoms, and its capture in 1481 helped set off the final campaign for Granada. It suits walkers, photographers and anyone touring the white villages between Ronda and Seville.
What to see and do in Zahara de la Sierra
Walk up from the main square to the castle tower, past the ruins of the old medieval town, for panoramic views over the lake and the mountains. In the village, the Baroque church of Santa María de la Mesa and the clock tower frame the square. The Zahara-El Gastor reservoir is popular for kayaking, paddleboarding and swimming at its small beach. Near the village, the Garganta Verde is a deep, narrow gorge with a cave chapel at the bottom, reached on a demanding trail that needs a free permit. The road over the Puerto de las Palomas towards Grazalema is spectacular. Coach tours from Seville stop here, often with a visit to a local olive mill for an oil tasting.
A day in Zahara de la Sierra
Climb to the castle tower in the morning for views over the lake. After lunch in the village, rent a kayak on the reservoir or visit an olive mill for a tasting. In the late afternoon, drive the Puerto de las Palomas road to Grazalema.
Food and local life
The area produces excellent olive oil, and mill visits with tastings are a highlight. Local dishes include sopa de tomate, game stews and pork products, along with sweets for the Corpus Christi festival, when the streets are carpeted with greenery and flowers.
