Setenil de las Bodegas

A white village where houses are built under huge overhangs of rock in the gorge of the river Trejo.

Why visit Setenil de las Bodegas

Setenil de las Bodegas is one of the most unusual villages in Spain. Rather than climbing a hilltop, it follows the gorge of the river Trejo, and many of its houses use the overhanging cliffs as roofs, so whole streets run beneath great shelves of stone. The village was a Moorish stronghold until 1484, and its castle tower still overlooks the gorge. Setenil suits photographers, families and anyone touring the white villages, and it combines easily with Ronda, just 20 minutes away.

What to see and do in Setenil de las Bodegas

Walk the two most famous streets, Cuevas del Sol, where bars and shops sit in the sun under the rock, and Cuevas de la Sombra, almost permanently in shade beneath the overhang. Climb up to the Nasrid-era castle tower and the church of La Encarnación for views over the roofs and the gorge, and follow the river paths between the houses. Several viewpoints around the village show how the buildings are tucked into the rock. Day trips from Málaga and small-group tours of Andalucía pair Setenil with Ronda, and walking holidays in the Sierra Sur visit the cave houses too. Olvera, with its castle and the Vía Verde de la Sierra, is 15 minutes away.

A day in Setenil de las Bodegas

Arrive mid-morning to walk Cuevas del Sol and Cuevas de la Sombra, then climb to the castle tower and the church. Have lunch in a tapas bar under the rock. In the afternoon, continue to Ronda or drive 15 minutes to Olvera and walk part of the Vía Verde de la Sierra.

Food and local life

Setenil's name may come from its bodegas, the cool cave cellars once used for wine. Today the village is known for its pork products, especially chorizo and morcilla, and for olive oil and pastries. Tapas bars in the rock along Cuevas del Sol are the place to try them.
